I Have a dog
The sky shimmers like an ocean refrain
Blue and swelling as it resists the creeping grain of stars in nightly haste
I’ve always loved this time of day
Looking over at you as you look on over the horizon
I think you must love it too, but a thought sneaks in like the wind that I wonder if you don't
Where the colors slowly drip away as flame on paint for me
For you, it must be a slow drawing curtain that takes all the lightness away
Efficient as the government in November stealing away the day
And as you watch, just like that your day is done and so you sleep instead of wait
And mine only began because we resist that urge so eagerly
You know some things much better than me and I wish I could listen
Ruffled fur twisted and curled with leaves and dirt caked to your pink skin
Speaking like a more intelligent human unashamed of your equal limbs as you explain
I look at you and your eyes express rules that I can not comprehend
I look at your eyes brown in intention and see my reflection
We could sit here on the water for a millennium and I wouldn't understand them
I believe you know me better than I do
So we sit communicating how we do
We check on eachother as our eyes speak better than we do
As the sun rolls into a blanket of custardy clouds it leaves a trail leaking
Cotton candy slaloming to evaporate in the ocean
Our deep brown eyes imploding before us with colors that bleed like syrup
Using human words out the side of my lips to explain it
But you see it, we both do, but its seperate
And I talk to you like God on the telephone hoping for a response
I see more of you than ever existed of him
Your behavior at the door and with the neighbor's uneven demeanor
The hair on your head crimping and falling down to a sweet bouquet for the necks covering
Analyzing illness until our brain is sore from functioning
Creases and wrinkles of time sliding to the temples, and a massage doesn't stop it
The freedom of water and grasses forever repeating
I know it and feel it at the same time you do
I know we’re both eager to prolong it, but time intervenes like an obsession
I would stop it, I promise you.
I hope that when its dark you too can see the stars because I’d hate to try and explain them
Maybe instead you’d show me what you’ve found out in the woods
I’d like that
Because it’s as if it's a secret for me and you
I know you'll go back to hide it, we both do that
I believe you’re closer to an ocean than any of us
A fluid course of triumphing decisions where we simply couldn't find the persistence
You won the hidden treats we scatter in ignorance, you did not steal them
We underestimate everything and you are smart enough to match our bet
If a dog only needs a best friend
We finally did something
And when I finally fall asleep I hope to find you in your dream
And join you in the pretty rolling ocean
